    Description

I got a complaint about too-large cvmfs stratum 1 logs from the FNAL stratum 1 operator, so I analyzed the log output on the UNL stratum1, running cvmfs-server-2.2.1. I found that literally 97.5% of the output lines were of the following form:

      Replicating from generic-2016-05-20T03:50:07Z repository tag
      Catalog up to date

41% of the log lines are from the alice-ocdb repository, presumably because they publish
often and have very many of these generic tags.

These messages are caused by the CVMFS_AUTO_TAG feature which is on by default. I think this should either be off by default or there should be a default mechanism that trims these default tags after a certain number of tags or period of time. It is not only a problem of output lines on stratum 1 logs, it also means that snapshots take longer and that more garbage is considered to not be garbage.
