Backport bugfix ROOT-7749

    Description

      Dear ROOT developers,

      I would like to request a backport of the fix to https://sft.its.cern.ch/jira/browse/ROOT-7749 to all releases starting from 6.12, included (at the moment, 6.12 + 6.14 + 6.16).

      This was a very long-standing bug, that can affect significantly the usage of TTree:Draw for data analysis workflows. The versions of experiment software currently in use in my collaboration are based on ROOT 6.12, and will be migrated to later versions in the future.
